Freedom to Roam

The digital world generates a ton of data. I mean a ton. According to a 2018  Forbes article, that’s 2.5 quintillion bytes of data every day. I had to look up quintillion.

Two Simple Mouse Clicks

Posted by Nick Papadopoulos on Feb 22, 2019 9:11:01 AM

It’s common during the preconstruction or feasibility phase to receive a request for a rough order of magnitude forecast for a theoretical future project. These requests have different names: initial budgets, preliminary proposals, first price responses, feasibility-stage estimates, or best guesses. There are also more colorful names, but I digress.

Process vs. History

When I witness confusion in the markets we serve, I try to bring clarity to improve the decision-making process. Education is vital to advance our knowledge and improve our systems.

Better is Better

I think Seth Godin is a gifted writer and his latest blog post inspired me to write this one.

I often hear the phrase “bigger is better.”

I will push back on that.

If we can't agree on the data...

Posted by Nick Papadopoulos on Oct 16, 2018 11:45:00 AM

Common ground. Common source. Common basis. We use these words interchangeably when we talk about our data, but few companies have achieved it.

It’s impossible difficult to make good decisions as a team if you don’t agree on the data.

Big Data: How to Leverage Estimating’s Data Explosion

Posted by Nick Papadopoulos on Jul 11, 2017 10:42:00 AM

Construction estimating is on the verge of a data explosion. As virtual design and construction methods increase in use, preconstruction teams are dealing with tens to hundreds of estimate iterations depending on a project’s size. Estimators need to find an effective way to organize, manage, and control that information. And they need to leverage it to make better decisions and forecasts.

Even more traditional estimating teams are dealing with an excessive number of project changes that require quick feedback on the cost impact of each design modification. With local, network, and cloud data storage now readily available and cost effective, there’s no longer any reason not to capture data that can help provide faster, more reliable cost feedback.

They Never Forget the First Number

Posted by Nick Papadopoulos on Apr 4, 2017 11:17:00 AM

Let’s face it. We are all biased. Bias stems from our past and our current environment. It influences our future. Bias shapes the way we feel, the way we think, and our behavior. It drives our decision-making process more than we care to admit.

Project History Cheat Sheet

Posted by Nick Papadopoulos on Jan 17, 2017 11:49:00 AM

Everyone has individual cheat sheets. They’re usually  Microsoft Excel workbooks that  are updated  every so often . Estimators create cheat sheets because either  there isn’t  a central database,  or there isn’t  one that they trust . In this case, I’m  referring to a cheat sheet of historical project costs.

2017–A Big Year for Benchmarking

Posted by Nick Papadopoulos on Dec 28, 2016 2:16:15 PM

2017 will be a big year for our team.

We’ve been working hard for quite some time on a new benchmarking solution. While we’re still in the sausage-making process, the light at the end of the tunnel is looking bright and I can’t wait to show you what we’ve come up with.

When Technology Surprises the Technologist

Posted by Nick Papadopoulos on Dec 6, 2016 10:07:00 AM

I want to share a story about a system evaluation that surprised me. System evaluations don’t usually work out this well, but this one warrants sharing.
