Big Data: How to Leverage Estimating’s Data Explosion

Posted by Nick Papadopoulos on Jul 11, 2017 10:42:00 AM

Construction estimating is on the verge of a data explosion. As virtual design and construction methods increase in use, preconstruction teams are dealing with tens to hundreds of estimate iterations depending on a project’s size. Estimators need to find an effective way to organize, manage, and control that information. And they need to leverage it to make better decisions and forecasts.

Even more traditional estimating teams are dealing with an excessive number of project changes that require quick feedback on the cost impact of each design modification. With local, network, and cloud data storage now readily available and cost effective, there’s no longer any reason not to capture data that can help provide faster, more reliable cost feedback.

5 Construction Estimating Trends to Watch

Posted by Walter Davis on Jun 27, 2017 10:45:00 AM

I recently was on the road for four weeks exhibiting at and attending some of the most informative construction technology conferences today: BuiltWorlds in Chicago, Advancing Building Estimation in Houston, and ENR FutureTech in San Francisco. These conferences attract some of the best and brightest minds in the construction industry.

Nick Papadopolous, CEO of estimating and benchmarking technology consultant Eos Group, joined me at several of the events. For this blog post, I sat down with Nick to discuss our observations from the conferences and what we see as the latest estimating trends. Here is an overview of our conversation:

New Technology to Tackle 5D BIM Challenges

Posted by Walter Davis on May 31, 2016 10:30:00 AM

Virtual design and construction (VDC) practices today extend into all phases of the building life cycle—from design, through estimating and construction management, and onto building maintenance and demolition.  That flow involves many individuals of different work disciplines—architect, engineer, estimator, project manager and more—each with their own requirements.

To address the needs of these different disciplines, software developers over the years have become experts in specific software applications. While this has given each discipline the deep functionality they need, it has also resulted in software silos. Now, more than ever, there is a need to share information between disciplines and break down those silos through VDC technology.

Time to Take 5D BIM to the Next Level

Posted by Walter Davis on May 25, 2016 9:30:06 AM

Building information modeling (BIM) offers many benefits to the AEC industry. In my last post, "Three reasons why estimators are adopting BIM", I pinpointed specifically how 5D BIM can be used by estimators to provide valuable cost saving strategies and greater project cost predictability.

Yet BIM, in many ways, is still in its infancy when it comes to estimating. Estimators operating within a BIM-based environment today particularly are running into challenges with take-off and specifications.

Three Reasons Why Estimators are Adopting BIM

Posted by Walter Davis on May 17, 2016 11:00:00 AM

Estimators in today’s fast-paced, small-margin world have their work cut out for them. Buildings are much more complex, while expectations are higher than ever to quickly deliver the best cost-saving strategies.

As a result, estimating teams are turning to new technology to help them address these challenges. One such technology is 5D model-based cost estimating (also referred to as 5D BIM).
