This year’s conference was held at the Sheraton Centre Hotel in Toronto, Canada. Once again, the AACEI staff put on a great conference in a great venue in a great city. For those that haven’t spent time in Toronto (especially in the summer), I highly recommend you find some time to enjoy the city.

I had the pleasure of attending the 2016 Western Winter Workshop in Indian Wells, CA earlier this month. This year’s event was presented jointly by the AACEI San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California sections. It was my first event after many, many attempts to participate in prior workshops. Naturally, something always got in the way—work, family, vacations, etc.—but not this time.

I want to follow up on Nick's blog post. This year's AACEI conference was a great success for both the AACEI and Eos Group. The most interesting aspect of the conference was the opportunity to connect with the community of cost estimators and engineers under one roof. We were also pleased with our new relationship with Cost Engineering Consultancy and Eos Group's North American representation of their Cleopatra Enterprise solutions.
Cleopatra Enterprise includes an indexation feature to apply adjustments to pricing in your estimates. Typically, the costs in your knowledgebase are based on costs that were known at a specific point in time. We all know that costs change over time for various reasons. After you have gone through the trouble of obtaining and analyzing the unit costs for thousands of components, you don’t want to do it again anytime soon, do you? Thankfully, there are analysts and agencies who monitor and publish cost indexes so they can capture and report cost trends for various commodities. One such agency is the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). They publish online cost indexes for numerous commodities. The following image shows an index for steel pipe and tube.
Do you like to use factors in your estimates? Eos Group is often asked about how to apply factors in estimates. Estimating software may provide this capability directly or indirectly. For example, estimators frequently want to apply factors to labor hours to account for different working conditions. Using factors can reduce the number of items you need in your knowledgebase because the same item can be factored for use in different conditions. Cleopatra Enterprise has some great features for applying factors. In the following estimate, a factor of 1.27 is applied to labor hours for a pipeline spread.
